Peatland Projects

Minister of State for Heritage and Electoral Reform, Malcolm Noonan, today announced that a fund of up to €500,000 is now open for applications, to support community-led projects as part of the Peatlands Community Engagement Scheme 2023.

As peatlands are the largest store of carbon in the Irish landscape, restoration brings significant benefits, enriching biodiversity and improvement of the water quality.  The Peatlands Community Engagement Scheme has been designed to assist and encourage local communities and groups to play their part in awareness of the great importance peatlands have within our environment.

This scheme has previously and continues to support a wide range of projects dedicated to the protection and restoration of these areas.  Projects that support the public enjoyment of the amazing peatland and wetlands can be funded up to a maximum of 80% of the project’s eligible costs. New to the scheme this year are the extension to support both designated and undesignated peatland or fen sites.
