Minister Charlie McConalogue has appropriately on #WorldPeatlandsDay announced the launch of a new primary school programme designed to educate children on environmental and economic benefits of our blanket bogs. This programme forms part of a pilot ran under the LIFE IP Wild Atlantic Nature project and developed with the Heritage Council.
This EU funded project continues to improve Ireland’s performance in improving the quality of our blanket bogs. Actions within the project are to conduct an education programme which can take the children on a fascinating journey learning the wonders of the bog habitat. The success of these actions have now lead to the Department of Agriculture, Food and the Marine together with partners including the Heritage Council rolling out this programme.
The programme promotes outdoor education and aims to generate greater awareness, respect, interest and appreciation of our heritage among primary school children (4-12 year olds) by encouraging both teachers and pupils to engage with their local heritage in a hands-on and interactive way.
