ARCZero is a farmer-led European Innovation Project (EIP) which studied greenhouse gas emissions as well as opportunities for carbon sequestration on seven project farms across Northern Ireland. Through this project, the seven farms involved reduced their emissions by 4% – 53% in less than three years.
At the project’s close-out conference in Co. Derry on 20th June, the ARCZero group reflected on these achievements and results, shared the lessons learned, and outlined future priorities for climate-smart farming.
John Gilliland, chair of ARCZero, emphasised the importance of every farmer knowing their baseline emission numbers and their farm’s potential for carbon sequestration in order to measure and manage carbon flows at the individual farm level. This can empower farmers to make a move towards carbon zero farming and presents new opportunities for diversification and contributing towards climate goals.
